An interesting question from Job chapter 1

I’ve been studying the book of Job lately.

An interesting question from chapter 1 has come to mind: Would you serve God for nothing? I mean, if the blessings stopped flowing today, would you still be interested in Him. In other words, where does your faith really come from? Is it only wrapped up in the good things you receive from Him?

Satan believes that you are so shallow that if the blessings stop flowing you will turn from God. He really believes that you are that superficial. What if the blessings not only stopped flowing but, they are taken away?

“But stretch out your hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.” Job 1:11 (NRSV)

So, not only would he be angry at God, he would curse Him to His face! That’s what Satan believes about Job. I believe he thinks this way about all of us. We are so wrapped up in ourselves that we become self-centered and shallow thinking. When the good stops we become angry and turn and bite the hand that feeds us.

I love the confidence God has in Job. He knows the real relationship they have. He knows Job very well. This is about having extreme faith in God. Job’s faith is in God alone, not in his blessings.

So, the question remains, would you serve God solely because He is God? Is that enough for you? Hmmmm, interesting.
Have a Great Day!

Mom used to say “You just wait; when you get old time will fly.” While I don’t think I’m as old as I thought she was at that moment, time is flying! Here it is, fifth Sunday October 2010, the year will soon be gone and history. November will be here tomorrow and I would like for us to take time to reflect on some special days the month holds and allow us to make the best of these days before they are gone. We as Americans are indeed a blessed people, we as Christian Americans are double blessed and have opportunity in November to show our appreciation by acknowledging that we are a blessed nation and acting responsibly.
November 2, Election Day, do I vote, if so, for whom? Voting is a privilege that was granted us by our founding fathers; we should look at this right as a duty to express our Christian standards. Our Republic is being stressed by man y who wish to deny our God and His Deity, if we expect our children and grandchildren to enjoy the liberties that we have, we must select politicians who best share our Christian values. Yes, allow me to encourage each of us, who are eligible, to meet our obligations by casting our vote while being guided by our conscience. Time is indeed flying by, take time to vote.
November 11, , is a day that we as parents and grandparents should take time to share with our loved ones what the members of the Armed Forces have done to keep our nations safe and free. Since the days of our Revolution, millions upon millions of men and women have so unselfishly preformed their duties to defend the United States from our enemies who would destroy our freedoms and lifestyle. We as Christian worship our Savior because he was willing to die to save our souls, our veterans have bled and died to save our nation and its freedom. That is a great price to pay, to overlook their sacrifice without showing our sincere appreciation is a disgrace, together let us soundly voice our gratitude before time flies by.
November 25 brings us to Thanksgiving Day. The history of Thanksgiving Day goes back even longer than this nation is old. Pilgrims arrived in North America seeking freedom and opportunity; saw the wisdom of stopping their daily quest of survival to say “Thank You” to their God for the safe passage across the Atlantic Ocean and their arrival in the New World. Many of these early settlers came to America to seek a place where they could worship God as they deemed correct and not to be mandated by the State where and how to worship. We too need to praise and thank our Lord that we still may worship Him without fear and not take these freedoms for granite.
Years later, after the founding of our nation’s government, our leaders saw the wisdom of making this day a national holiday. Unfortunately this day has become a day to over eat and watch football on the tube. This year may I suggest that we take some time with our families to reflect our nation’s history and the desire of its earliest settlers to honor God for His blessings and care?
As November passes by, we have very distinct opportunities to express and share our faith. I am confident Christian should strive, no, must strive of be good citizens and we as good citizens must diligently work to preserve our Christian values.
Time is indeed flying by; make the best of it!

May God bless us all,
Donnie Ellis
